First published in 1597, John Dowland's First Booke of Songes or Ayres of four parts, inaugurated a golden age of English music publications for lutes, voices, and viols. This masterful collection of songs displays a wide range of expressive techniques, from light-hearted dance tunes to melancholic melodies of despair. Dowland's publication allowed for a wide variety of performing options, with parts for voices, lute, viols or whatever instruments happened to be on hand. The Denver Early Music Consort will be joined by STRING, a trio of violas da gamba in a rare performance of all 21 songs from this collection.
