~ ~ ~
In the early 20th century, a German composer named Carl Orff shone the spotlight on a medieval manuscript, and turned its content into one of the most famous large orchestral works ever written. Orff's piece is so well-known that the name of the manuscript has become synonymous with his magnum opus. But the Carmina Burana codex is a masterwork in itself, a massive compiled anthology of secular and sacred songs, poems, proverbs, and quotes. This concert aims to introduce its audience to the original Carmina Burana, the chants and tunes sourced from the medieval document ca. 1230.
